Measured Workload Pricing Announced for VSE Products
On June 21, CA introduced Measured Workload Pricing for customers running the z/VSE and VSE/ESA operating systems. Measured Workload Pricing bases licensing costs on measured system usage - rather than total potential hardware capacity - enabling customers to more closely align IT spending with changing business requirements.

Customers can establish licensing costs based on measured levels of usage, enabling them to flexibly increase usage as needed to support growing demand. Measured Workload Pricing is based on utilization metrics generated by performance measurement or resource accounting software pre-certified by CA.

A customer with 60 MIPS on a zSeries processor running z/VSE or VSE/ESA, for example, may only be utilizing the machine at 50 percent capacity - with the balance of capacity held in reserve for future business growth or periods of peak demand. Under CA's Measured Workload Pricing model, license costs are based on the actual capacity utilized. Customers can reserve the ability to leverage the full power of the mainframe until needed.

BrightStor® CA-Dynam®/T Now Supports JCLIF Macro for VTAPE on z/VSE 3.1
An enhancement to BrightStor® CA-Dynam®/T Tape Management for VSE R7 enables you to read a virtual tape as input to a program without inserting the VTAPE commands into the JCL. This enhancement exploits the JCLIF macro introduced by IBM in z/VSE Version 3.1.

Prior to the enhancement, BrightStor CA-Dynam/T users were required to specify a VTAPE START command in JCL to read a controlled VTAPE input version. Using the JCLIF macro, BrightStor CA-Dynam/T can specify the appropriate VTAPE START command for the user at pre-open time. You no longer need to know if a version is a VTAPE or where the file is located before a job is run. BrightStor CA-Dynam/T saves the location of the file when the VTAPE version is created. This information will be used to construct the appropriate VTAPE START command at pre-open time if a VTAPE START command was not already specified. Additionally, if the VTAPE START command was initiated by BrightStor CA-Dynam/T, a VTAPE STOP command will be issued by BrightStor CA-Dynam/T at post-close of the VTAPE file.

Sites that have a mix of virtual and real tapes no longer have to manually update JCL that reads a VTAPE file for input. This feature will save time and effort, eases the utilization of VTAPE, and can expand its use. With BrightStor CA-Dynam/T doing the work, you need to modify the job that writes the file you want kept in the VTAPE system only once.

Please contact Customer Support for more information about this enhancement, which can be implemented by applying published PTF's.

BrightStor CA-Dynam documentation includes complete information about BrightStor
CA-Dynam/T for VSE's support for VTAPE. Documentation can be downloaded at ca.com/supportconnect/, either on its own or along with the product tape.

eTrust™ CA-Top Secret® Now Supports Password Suppression on z/VSE 3.1
eTrust™ CA-Top Secret® Security for VSE r3 has been enhanced to suppress the display of passwords entered in response to selected WTORs. Without the enhancement, a password entered in response to an authorization verification for a change to a TSS control option or in response to an authorization verification to enter TSS command mode would be displayed on the system console and would be available in clear text to any user having the ability to view the system console.

eTrust CA-Top Secret for VSE takes advantage of new operating system services to raise the standard for security and integrity by suppressing the display of sensitive information on the system console. This eTrust CA-Top Secret enhancement exploits the ROUTECDE=9 enhancement IBM introduced in z/VSE 3.1. The password suppression enhancement is not supported on VSE/ESA systems.

eTrust CA-Top Secret for VSE PTFs QO64958 and QO68740 enable this enhancement and can be obtained at ca.com/supportconnect/. With these PTFs applied, the message "0D01I REPLY TO SECURITY WTOR SUPPRESSED" will be issued rather than the password appearing on the console and in the hardcopy log.

Please access ca.com/supportconnect/ to download the PTFs or contact CA Customer Support.
