General Information
Advantage™ VISION:Results® - Avoiding Abends in Variable Length Records
In the Advantage VISION:Results Reference Guide, we advise: "For output files, you must tell Advantage VISION:Results how long the data portion of the current record is." If the length, keyword, and data name are not specified on a variable length field, Advantage VISION:Results moves the MAXIMUM LRECL coded on the file statement. This means that bytes unused by the application are filled with unknown contents. If a short record is read, Advantage VISION:Results may pick up data from the next record. This could lead to incorrect output, S0C4 abends, or even S0C7 abends.

Advantage™ Automated Code Manager for COBOL - Restructure and Improve Your COBOL Programs the Easy Way
The typical COBOL program is a large, complex program that has been modified many times by many COBOL programmers and probably contains a significant amount of "spaghetti" code. Advantage Automated Code Manager is a tool that helps automate and streamline the difficult and time-consuming process of code improvement. For each COBOL program, code structuring will:
  • Restructure the program control flow and produce a 100% structured program
    • Eliminate the spaghetti code
  • Retain the full and original program functionality
  • Explicitly isolate all the data logic code at the end of the code
    • Batch I/O, CICS, SQL, DL/I statements
  • Implicitly isolate all the business logic code
  • Remove all the dead code
  • Document all Control Flow changes
  • Produce a program Structure Chart
  • Apply programming standards
Once the COBOL program has been restructured to your specifications and, after the program has been modified manually, you should reexamine it via the Assess component of Advantage Automated Code Manager to help ensure that the quality level remains high.
