CA is continually working to improve our software and services to best meet the needs of our customers. In order to focus our development efforts and to help our customer base achieve their strategic business initiatives, we are investing our resources in new technology and software and will be dropping support for Unicenter Data Compressor for DB2 for z/OS. This means Unicenter Data Compressor for DB2 for z/OS will no longer be enhanced and that maintenance and technical support will be discontinued within the next 12 months. CA Database Management Solutions for DB2 and IMS Tools Service Pack Buckets
CA Database Management Solutions for DB2 and IMS Tools, Service Pack Buckets Service Pack, Preventive Maintenance and Preventive Service Planning buckets, are now available for the DB2 and IMS tools!

The Service Pack Bucket contains all PTFs that have been released as part of a Service Pack. It provides a quick and easy way to download full Service Packs from our support website, eliminating the need to order physical tapes as new maintenance releases are made available. The Preventive Maintenance Bucket contains all PTFs that have been generated since the last Service Pack was released. The Preventive Service Planning (PSP) bucket containing hiper PTFs, and PTFs resolving PE PTFs, is also still available.

The DB2 Service Pack, Preventive Maintenance, and PSP buckets are located on the Unicenter® DB2 Products for DB2 for z/OS support page at supportconnectw.ca.com/public/db2/db2_supp.asp. The IMS Service Pack, Preventive Maintenance and PSP buckets are located on the Unicenter® IMS Utilities Solutions Pack support page at supportconnectw.ca.com/public/ims/ims_supp.asp. Important Changes to the CA DB2 Display Services
The initial feedback from the r11.5 user community has been favorable with regard to our strategy for supporting long object names. As a result of broad, world-wide adoption of the r11.5 release, we have received a great deal of feedback regarding our display services and have received some suggestions for improvement of these services. Need a Quick Method to Convert From VCAT to STOGROUP Defined – OR – Do You Need to Consolidate Extents Without the REORG Outage?
One important issue to start thinking about is DB2 objects using VCAT defined objects as opposed to STOGROUP defined objects. These objects will have to be converted sooner or later in order to exploit some of the new features available in DB2 V8 and DB2 V9.1 for z/OS.

Another issue many DB2 users experience from time to time is related to tablespaces and indexes reaching an "out of extent" situation, or the need to consolidate extents without the outage from a Reorganization - or even move the pageset to a specific volume for performance reasons.

CA Database Analyzer™ offers a unique method to assist in both of these scenarios, using a high speed data movement mechanism while also taking care of the necessary catalog updates - and even more important, automatic fallback if "something goes wrong".

The steps needed to accomplish these tasks are:

1. Two possible starting points:
   • Either from the CA DB2 Products Main Menu, specify option D (Database Analyzer), and then pick option D (Dataset Facility).
   • Or pick option DF from the General Facilities on the Main Menu.
     
     
2. Specify the object type and object name and press ENTER, where after the object details are listed (volume, allocation quantities and the storage group or VCAT name.
   
   
3. Simply overwrite what needs to be changed (e.g., the new volume, the storage group or the new primary/secondary quantity), and press ENTER.
   
   
4. The commands to execute the change are created, so simply hit ENTER for online execution or specify B for MODE Batch.
   
   
5. In this example, the PRIQTY and SECQTY has been set to 2000 and 4000 for partition 3 of tablespace SYSCOLTS in DSNDB04.

6. The steps performed during the execution is (where x represents the dataset number):
   • The object is stopped
   • The necessary ALTER command(s) are executed so the catalog reflects the changes.
   • IDCAMS define of a new cluster (with Node=Y000x) using the original dataset as MODEL (after making sure this VSAM dataset doesn't exist)
   • The content of the original VSAM dataset (Node=A000x) is copied to the new dataset (Node=Y000x).
   • The original datasets (Node=A000x) are renamed to Node=Z000x.
   • The new datasets (Node=Y000x) are renamed to Node=A000x.
   • What was the original datasets (Node=A000x now renamed to Node=Z000x) are then deleted.
   • The execution is committed and the object is started again in RW mode.
