Major Enhancements
  • Separate User Interface from Process. The major functions of the IO module have been replaced. The new APIs consist of DB2 stored procedures that are now callable from any platform. The existing IO module now calls the stored procedures; customers who wrote applications that called the IO module can continue to do so.
  • Single Repository Creator. Multiple copies of the repository can now reside in a single DB2 subsystem.
  • Increased Maximum Number of Versions. The version attribute has been converted from two characters to a small integer increasing the number of versions from 3,100 to 32,767.
  • Single Length for Attributes Defined as Name. All attributes defined as Name are now defined as VARCHAR(245). Performance improvements will be seen when joining tables on the attributes defined as Name.
  • SMPE Installation. The installation process for the repository will now use SMPE.
  • IMS Conversion for XDFLD Associations. Three associations (DDATA, SUBSEQ, and SRCH) in the IMS model have been converted to relationships in order to store sequence numbers. The DBD scanner and generator now generate these fields in sequence instead of random order.
  • New Data Set Prefix. The Repository data sets can be prefixed with any valid data set name up to 35 characters. The two-node prefix standard has been eliminated.

The minimum requirements are: Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 6a; Windows 2000 with Service Pack 2; or Windows XP. Upgrading now may avoid delays later.

Implementing Abbreviations for Standard Commands

ADDING A SHORT FORM FOR COMMANDS THAT EXECUTE EVERYWHERE IN LONG FORM - "CLEAR," FOR EXAMPLE.

Question: Why does the command "CLEAR" work in all windows, while its abbreviation, "CL," will not?

Answer: Some commands - CLEAR, GOTO, JUMP, NEXT, PREV, and so on - are hard coded to work everywhere, while their abbreviations are not.

In order to get an abbreviation for the command to work, the command must first be added to the control table. Once in the control table, an abbreviation can be added to the command.

To add the command CLEAR to the control table, use the EXTEND feature of the Repository.

1. Using the EXTEND dialog, select the Command entity. Fill in the attributes for the command/window combination and insert the row. An example is shown below. For more information, refer to the Advantage™ Repository Administrator's Guide under "Working with Commands."

Once the command has been inserted, issue a build command to update the control tables. Executing System.commands will display a list of commands. In the Global command column, record the abbreviation and save it.

SIZE ------------ SYSTEM COMMANDS ------------ MAX
¦ SAVE DELETE RESELECT CLEAR NAVIGATE HELP ¦
    ¦ GLOBAL SUB *
¦ COMMAND WINDOW FUNCTION FUNCTION COMMAND ¦
    ¦ -------- -------- -------- -------- -------- ¦
    ¦ CL DBEXCEL CLEAR ¦
    ¦ ? DBEXCEL HELP ¦
¦ DEL DBEXCEL EDIT DELETE ¦
¦ EDOM DBEXCEL EDIT DOMAIN ¦
¦ EI DBEXCEL EDIT INSERT ¦
Now you can issue CL instead of CLEAR from the window in question.
