z/OS 1.7 ISPF Requires IBM APAR OA14749
Under z/OS 1.7, users invoking the MICS Workstation Facility (MWF), for the second time in one TSO session, may receive the following message:

"ISPF system dataset allocation error - Temporary control card data set cannot be allocated - error trying to open userid.MICS6.TEMP*.CNTL file."

IBM has written APAR OA14749 to address this problem. We recommend the application of this APAR to prevent MWF users from encountering this problem. A summary of the problem follows:

A file tailoring request fails with a system data set allocation error message and then a second message to say that the temporary control card data set cannot be allocated. A terminating dialog containing message MSGISPF102 may then be displayed, or a return to the application from the FTOPEN request with a return code of 20 may occur.

In the APAR, IBM states that FTOPEN fails to update an ISPF internal control block with the latest volume information for the temporary control card data set when it is deleted and reallocated. This results in an OBTAIN failure. The problem is due to SMS opening the data set on a different volume than previously used but ISPF not updating the information correctly.

For more information about APAR OA14749 and to obtain the fix, contact IBM.

Unicenter® NeuMICS® Space Utilization and Reporting
Unicenter NeuMICS Space Utilization and Reporting will be available with SP3. It provides the ability to report on NeuMICS database usage down to the individual file level. When using standard z/OS space reporting tools against the NeuMICS database, only the space used by a timespan can be reported. With NeuMICS Space Utilization and Reporting, it is possible to determine the space used by individual NeuMICS files and the free space available within the SAS library.

Information provided by NeuMICS Space Utilization and Reporting can be used to fine tune file cycle definitions, determine where to split a database, and estimate the maximum size of a NeuMICS database. To become one of the first to use this new feature, see Wanted: Beta Candidates in the General Information section of this E-News.

Unicenter® NeuMICS® Database Health Check Utility
During the life cycle of the NeuMICS database, many configuration changes may occur. These changes can result in superfluous files and other anomalies that waste space. The NeuMICS Database Health Check Utility, delivered with SP2, scans a NeuMICS database and reports on several anomalous conditions including the following:

  • Cycles that exceed defined cycles
  • Non-NeuMICS files
  • Residual database update files
  • Inactive component files in database
  • Improper file placement

The Health Check Utility can optionally generate delete actions for cycles that exceed defined cycles.

The NeuMICS Database Health Check Utility can be executed from the NeuMICS Administrator Utilities panels in the NeuMICS Administrator Facility MWF application (MWF;5;4;5).

For more information, see the PIOM delivered with SP2 or above.
