General Information
Advantage™ Ingres® r3 OPF Enumeration Enhancement
The optimization of queries whose "from" clauses contain large numbers of tables can cause high CPU usage and, hence, have associated performance implications. Queries referencing 10, 15, or more base tables, typically accompanied by any number of possibly useful secondary indexes, have the potential to take a significant amount of CPU time to compile.

The primary reason for this phenomenon is the attempt by Advantage Ingres to consider all possible alternatives in order to guarantee the best plan for executing the query. Advantage Ingres incorporates numerous heuristic techniques to reduce the size of the query plan search space, but the size of this space can still result in queries that consume excessive CPU time without returning a valid plan.

This technical document details a discussion of the reasons for this consumption of CPU time and describes a new feature in Advantage Ingres r3 that improves the performance of such queries enormously.
