Soon to Be Announced - Open Beta for Ingres® r3 Cluster Solution (Ingres Cluster)
on Linux

Ingres r3 running in an active-active cluster configuration under Linux is approaching beta release with an anticipated start date of mid-to-late April. This will be an open beta with source and binaries available from the Ingres open source website: ca.com/opensource/ingres.

To run Ingres r3 Cluster Solution, you need the following:
  • Two or more x86-based servers running any version of Linux that supports the Native POSIX Threading Library. This requirement generally means a 2.6 kernel, but Red Hat has also back ported NPTL support to later versions of the 2.4 kernel (RHES SP2 and above).
  • OpenDLM Distributed Lock Manager (DLM). This is an open source distributed lock manager that can be obtained from the CA open source website (preferred) or from sourceforge.net/projects/opendlm.
  • iiquorumd cluster quorum manager. This is a small daemon process that maintains cluster membership for OpenDLM. This will be available from the Ingres open source website.
  • A cluster file system (CFS). Ingres is vendor-neutral with respect to cluster file systems. We have tested with both OCFS and GFS, with much better results from GFS. At present, there are unresolved issues with OCFS in which OCFS presents an inconsistent view of the file system to different nodes to applications like Ingres, which create and destroy files and directories on the fly. In principle, any CFS that presents shared storage as a regular file system while maintaining file consistency will work. Various CFS implementations have their own kernel requirements, which may be more restrictive than those of Ingres, and GFS has very poor performance with database page sizes of 2K.
  • Any form of shared storage supported by the selected CFS.
  • A private LAN is strongly recommended for DLM traffic and CFS usage. A separate private LAN for both is preferred. The LAN can be put together with standard Ethernet cards and switches or can use specialized cluster interconnect hardware such as Topspin's InfiniBand or Myrinet.
If you are interested in participating in this beta, please contact Patricia.Austin@ca.com.

The Ingres® Query Optimizer
The Optimizer Facility (OPF) is one of the major components of the Ingres database server. It is responsible for transforming a parsed query into an executable query plan. This transformation includes the phases one would expect from a state-of-the-art commercial query optimizer including query rewrite and cost-based plan generation. This document discusses the architecture of OPF in sufficient detail to enable a DBMS practitioner to understand its major control structures and flow of control.

Problems with Ingres® r3 on SuSE 9.2
Attempting to install the current GA release of Ingres r3 for x86 Linux - that is, Ingres r3 3.0.1 (int.lnx/109) - on SuSE Linux 9.2 Pro results in many errors and probably complete failure.

SuSE 9.2 is the first major distribution to ship with Bash v3.0 and changes in v3.0 adversely affect some of the shell scripts used during installation and operation of Ingres on Linux. With the new version, if bin/bash is invoked as /bin/sh (which is usually a link to /bin/bash on Linux), it enforces POSIX compliance much more strictly than in previous releases. All the Ingres shell scripts are run under /bin/sh, and Bash does not like some of the "trap" syntax Ingres uses in many of its scripts, which results in the following error:

trap: usage: trap [-lp] [[arg] signal_spec ...]

RedHat Enterprise Linux 4.0 also ships with Bash v3.0 but does NOT have the same problem. This may be because it is using a slightly old version of Bash (3.0.0 instead of 3.0.15 on SuSE 9.2 Pro), or it may be that RedHat has modified its version of Bash v3.0 not to exhibit this behavior.

Either way, the problematic syntax has been corrected and the problem does not exist in the forthcoming Ingres r3 3.0.2 release.

Compiling Ingres® 32-Bit Applications on AMD64 Linux
Ingres r3 for Intel Linux is supported on AMD64 Linux, but to compile and link 32-bit binaries, you must tell the compiler you want this by using the -m32 switch. Failure to do so may result in errors relating to the chip architecture. The following is an example of what the compilation command should look like:

cc -m32 -w -o /db/ingres/example/test test.c -
lc/i3/ingres/lib/dates_lib.a /i3/ingres/lib/libingres.a -lm -ldl -lpthread -lcrypt -lgcc_s

Advantage™ Enterprise Access (Gateway) Timezone Adjustment Behavior
The Enterprise Access gateway handles timezone adjustment differently than Ingres®. That is, the DATE fields do not undergo the same timezone adjustment process as Ingres. When dealing with DATE fields in the gateway, it is important to understand how date values are stored and retrieved across different timezones so that proper measures can be taken to ensure date value consistency. This article describes this important timezone adjustment behavior.
