CA ARCserve® Backup r12.5 is Now Available!
CA announces the release of CA ARCserve Backup r12.5.
On behalf of CA, we appreciate your business and the opportunity to provide high-quality, innovative software and services. As part of our ongoing commitment to customer success, we regularly release updated versions of our products. Today, we are pleased to announce that CA ARCserve Backup r12.5 is now available.

The new release includes a wide range of enhancements that provide extra value while expanding the breadth of protection, simplifying management and speeding the recovery of data. Some of the key features included are:

  • Integrated data deduplication providing you with a cost-effective means of reducing storage needs, protecting critical data and integrating, configuring and managing deduplication in your existing backup environment.
  • Enhanced virtualization support allows you to perform image- and file-level backup and restores in VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 environments, and establish a schedule for full, raw-level and daily incremental backups saving storage space and providing rapid granular restores.
  • Dashboard with storage resource management (SRM) reporting offers graphical insight into your backup environment and allows you to monitor the status of all backup activities, find the nodes that are taking the longest, locate backed up data, discover if data is encrypted and ready for disaster recovery and track volume, disk and memory usage on each of your production servers.
  • Access control and auditing integrates Windows authentication into the audit and role management process, improving your ability to determine and control which users have full access to backup resources and which ones have limited permissions.
  • Encryption key management provides password management capabilities for encryption keys, shortening the time it takes to recover encrypted backup data - without the need to repeatedly provide passwords for recovery purposes.
  • Unique media assure feature validates that the data on your backup media is readable and writable, helping you report on the usability of all media and verify if it is accessible without identification.
  • Oracle RMAN and 64-bit platform compatibility simplifies the backup of Oracle databases and supports the backup of Oracle databases on both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms.
  • Agent deployment packages leverage a wizard-like application that lets you simultaneously install and upgrade CA ARCserve Backup agents on multiple remote hosts, so you can ensure that you are running the most current versions of all agents in your backup environment.

New Trial Download Versions

In order to reduce the size of the CA ARCserve Backup Trial Download we have broken the product up by languages. This has enabled us to reduce the download size from 3GB for all languages to approximately 1.2 GB for English only and approximately 1.4 GB for other language combinations. All CA ARCserve Backup features and options are available for 30 days with the trial versions. The current downloads available depending on geography are:

CA XOsoft™ High Availability r12.5 and CA XOsoft™ Replication r12.5 are Now Available!
CA XOsoft Replication and CA XOsoft High Availability software provide both business continuity and disaster recovery capabilities through the integration of application-aware replication, continuous data protection (CDP), manual, scheduled and automated failover and non-disruptive, automated disaster recovery testing. These capabilities help ensure the protection and recoverability of business-critical applications, files, emails and databases in both physical and virtual environments.

CA XOsoft Replication and CA XOsoft High Availability are robust business continuity and disaster recovery solutions that integrate application-aware replication, continuous data protection (CDP), automated failover and non-disruptive, automated disaster recovery testing to help ensure the protection and recoverability of business-critical applications, files, emails and databases servers in physical and virtual environments.

Highlights of the new features include:

  • Virtualization Enhancements including High Availability for VMware vCenter Server and single-instance host-level replication for Microsoft Hyper-V that help extend the efficiencies of virtual environments.
  • Certification of virtual machine replication and failover for Citrix, XenServer and Citrix Essentials.
  • Windows System State Protection and Windows Registry Synchronization provide operating system protection and recovery efficiency.
  • Replication for UNIX and Linux environments, offering broader protection via a single, comprehensive solution for heterogeneous environments.
  • Replication and High Availability for Microsoft Office SharePoint 2007.
  • High Availability for the CA XOsoft Control Services to help ensure CA XOsoft system manageability.
  • Automated DR Testing is now included with both CA XOsoft products, at no additional cost, providing the critical ability to proactively verify the availability of the failover system with no impact to the production environment.
  • 64-bit native engine for x86 to x64 replication and migration.
  • Localization and translation into French, German, Italian, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Chinese (simplified and traditional) and Japanese for world-wide use.

Security Notice for CA ARCserve® Backup for UNIX Apache HTTP Server
CA's support is alerting customers to security risks with CA ARCserve Backup on Solaris, Tru64, HP-UX, and AIX. Multiple vulnerabilities exist in the Apache HTTP Server version as shipped with ARCserve Backup. CA has issued updates that contain version 2.0.63 of the Apache HTTP Server to address the vulnerabilities.

Workaround
As a workaround solution, disable the Apache HTTP Server with the "stopgui" command. To re-enable the server, run "startgui".

Stopping the Apache HTTP Server will prevent the ARCserve user from performing GUI operations. Most of the operations provided by the GUI can be accomplished via the command line.

Alternatively, restrict remote network access to reduce exposure.

RO03141 - This fix addresses a problem during that can result in session numbers being improperly read when scanning the tape. The result of this is that scanning operations and session migrations can fail with errors. This is available for download at:

Ask CA Enhancements
In conjunction with the GA release of CA ARCserve™ Backup r12.5, Ask CA content has now been expanded to include CA ARCserve Backup r12.5! Additionally, over 2,800 product error codes are now accessible from within Ask CA, along with information about CA ARCserve Backup r12 Service Pack 1, Microsoft Exchange Agent, licensing, and hardware/tape engine.

Based on a "supply and demand" content delivery model, Ask CA continually improves with customer usage. So if some of your questions aren't answered initially, please check back later as our subject matter experts are constantly updating Ask CA content based on the questions asked. New Product Compatibility Tool
Have a Product or OS Compatibility Need? A new solution for product compatibility information, by product or OS is now available on CA Support Online (CSO). You can search on CA product or search by a vendor, OS and version combination to get to the information you need. This application is accessed from the Compatibilities left-hand navigation menu item, and the new solution will run in parallel with existing file-based compatibility matrices, which will be replaced as your CA products are updated. New Support Online Site Profiles
Speed Your MTTR with CA Support Online Site Profiles Use the new Site Level Environment Profile function on CA Support Online (CSO), to speed your Mean Time to Repair (MTTR). This new function is accessible through the Site Profile label at the top of the page when you log into CA Support Online. Use it to define information about your IT environments including configurations, hardware, OS and software. You can upload a file containing environment data or predefine up to 25 environmental profile configurations and preferences. Attach your environment information to any case you open and CA Support technicians can use your predefined information to resolve your cases more efficiently.

CA ARCserve® Backup r12 for Windows - What Does it Mean to Have a Yellow Exclamation Mark Next to a Tape Drive in the ARCserve® Device Manager?
The icon with the Yellow Exclamation Mark next to a Tape Drive in ARCserve Device Manager indicates that the Tape Drive supports Hardware Encryption.

This icon may be visible with hardware such as LTO4 drives, which support hardware encryption. In the ARCserve Device Manager if you highlight this type of tape drive, and go to the 'Details' tab in the lower right-hand section of the window, you can see a field named 'Encryption Capability'. The value for this field will be 'YES' for an encryption enabled tape drive.

CA ARCserve® Backup r11.5 for UNIX/LINUX - Ingres Database Does not Start After Changing the Hostname of the Server
Description:
Ingstart fails with "No ingres servers are configured for running in this installation".

Solution:
The error message of "No ingres servers are configured for running in this installation" indicates that hostname at the Operating System level is not the same as the hostname recognized for the Ingres installation. In order to resolve this, globally:
  • ingstop (if changing hostname)
  • Substitute new_hostname for old_hostname in the config.dat file
  • Substitute new_hostname for old_hostname in the protect.dat
  • ingsetenv II_GCNxx_LCL_VNODE new_hostname
  • ingsetenv II_HOSTNAME new_hostname (if you have this configured)
  • Remove the file from II_SYSTEM/ingres/files/name/IILOGIN_old_hostname
  • Rename all files in II_SYSTEM/ingres/files/name so that all files previously having the extension (old_hostname), now have the extension (new_hostname)
  • ingstart

CA XOsoft™ r12 - How to Enable XOsoft™ Ports Over the Windows 2008 Firewall
Description:
You are trying to configure an XOsoft scenario using Windows 2008 server with the Firewall enabled. In order for XOsoft to function properly you must add an exception for the XOsoft port on the firewall to allow for communication to/from the engine running on the server.

Solution:
Please follow these procedures to add the XOsoft port on Windows 2008 Firewall and allow communication to from the XOsoft engine, these steps need to be performed on both the Master and The Replica machine which will be taking part in the scenario:

Go to the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security

  1. Select Inbound Rules.
  2. Click on New Rule on the right hand side where you see the Actions.
  3. In the New Inbound Rule Wizard, Select the Port Radio button and click on Next.
  4. Select TCP radio button and then select the radio button which says Specific local ports: and then specify "25000" and click on Next.
  5. Select Allow the Connection Radio button and click on Next.
  6. Make sure you select all the 3 check boxes for Domain, Private, and Public and click on Next.
  7. Give a name to the port and click on Finish.
This example was for an inbound rule created for XOSoft Engine on Windows Firewall. Follow the same steps for creating an outbound rule.
