CA Simplifies Product Names
Beginning January 30, 2007, CA is simplifying its product names. Our intention is to describe our products by what they enable you and your business to accomplish. Some names have already changed; others will change over the next 12-18 months as part of the planned development cycle. There is nothing you need to do. We have established a dedicated site at ca.com/productnames as a resource center where you'll find additional information such as frequently asked questions, customer service numbers, and a list of current product names and former names.

New Release! CA Tape Encryption r12.5 Protects Data, Eliminates Exposures to Costly z/OS Tape Breach Incidents and Fulfills Security Compliance Requirements
CA announces the availability of CA Tape Encryption r12.5 --- formerly BrightStor® Tape Encryption --- a new release that simplifies management of the tape encryption process through automation, making it easier for companies to reduce the risk of unauthorized access to confidential information and fulfill escalating security breach of information compliance requirements.

Encryption for mainframe tapes has rapidly percolated to the top of data center requirements due to increasing breach disclosures by high profile organizations regarding the loss or theft of non-encrypted magnetic tapes containing sensitive personal and business-critical information. The urgency to encrypt sensitive data is validated in that most states have either passed or are considering enactment of legislation requiring accountability and proactive notification.

CA Tape Encryption is an innovative, flexible, easily implemented comprehensive z/OS tape protection solution that ensures your data is not breached even if the tapes fall into the wrong hands. CA Tape Encryption safeguards sensitive data, automates full life cycle key management, and does not require you to purchase expensive and complex hardware.

This new release of CA Tape Encryption introduces several major technology improvements:

ZIIP Exploitation - CA Tape Encryption can exploit IBM's System z9 Integrated Information Specialty Processor (zIIP) to offload encryption and compression processing from the mainframe's general-purpose processors - thereby reducing MSU requirements and makes CA Tape Encryption the most cost-effective way to implement your cryptography strategy.

Security Enhancement - Enables ultimate control and implementation flexibility of your cryptographic environment for selecting data sets for encryption. Users have a choice of utilizing DFSMS-based selection, or by utilizing your security system of choice (CA ACF2™ for z/OS, CA Top Secret® for z/OS, or IBM RACF), or a combination of both DFSMS and your security system. Enabling security-based selection gives the security administrator total control and added flexibility for protecting critical data and managing encryption policies as an integral part of corporate security policies. Facilities are also provided to protect CA Tape Encryption console commands, utilities, and individual symmetric keys.

Integrated Compression - Now you can easily compress tape files before encryption, to save space on your tape media. Simply identify the desired compression algorithm and compression is automatically performed prior to encryption. Minimum compression rates can be specified to improve performance and maximize resources.

AES software-only encryption - Flexible new software-only version of the AES encryption algorithm is provided which enables encryption and decryption without special crypto-processors. Key strengths of 128, 192, and 256 bits are supported. Customers with z800 and z900 systems who have not purchased or activated a CCF card can use this algorithm to protect their data.

Webcast scheduled - A technical webcast is planned for September 18, 2007. Register today to attend this informative session to learn about the new functions and get answers to your questions. To learn more or to view the most up to date schedule of live technical webcasts, visit ca.com/webcasts/techupdate.

To explore the topic of data encryption further, CA invites you to read a great whitepaper: "Data Encryption Strategies" authored by Fred Moore, President of Horison Information Strategies. Click here.

General Information
CA ARCserve® Backup for Windows r11.5: How to Configure Clients to Use a Particular IP Address
The CA ARCserve Backup for Windows and CA ARCserve Backup Windows Client Agent support the use of multiple network interface cards (NICs). For computers with more than one network card, the agent checks all enabled NICs in the machine. You can manually override this selection by selecting the IP address of the NIC that you want to dedicate for backup purposes. When you define this configuration, the client agent will listen using only this interface card.

For a complete description on how to configure the base product and client agent to use a specific IP address, including step-by-step procedure, please go to:

CA ARCserve® Backup for Linux/UNIX r11.5: How to Configure ARCserve to Automatically Restart After a Server Reboot
To start ARCserve automatically at boot up, a startup/stop file is created in /etc/init.d folder, which goes by the name bab. A link to that file is placed in /etc/rc5.d folder called S99bab. These files get invoked with a start paremeter as part of the regular OS startup process.

You can also run csetup anytime and select option 6) Automatic Start/Stop and it will add or remove the autostart file.
