CA Simplifies Product Names
Beginning January 30, 2007, CA is simplifying its product names. Our intention is to describe our products by what they enable you and your business to accomplish. Some names have already changed; others will change over the next 12-18 months as part of the planned development cycle. There is nothing you need to do. We have established a dedicated site at ca.com/productnames as a resource center where you'll find additional information such as frequently asked questions, customer service numbers, and a list of current product names and former names.

CA Launches Mid-Market and Storage Business Unit
CA has announced the formation of a Mid-Market and Storage business unit focused on companies with 500 - 5,000 employees and revenue of $100 million to $1 billion. This new business unit will deliver CA solutions for this market through CA's reseller channel-enabling partners.

Mid-Market companies face exponential business growth as they introduce new offerings or enter new markets to achieve competitive differentiation. CA's new business unit and Enterprise IT Management (EITM) vision will enable these companies to unify and simplify their increasingly complex IT environments by focusing limited IT resources on technology innovation instead of technology maintenance.

As part of its mid-market initiatives, the company has unveiled CA Recovery Management, a solution specifically designed for the channel to sell into these targeted accounts. This comprehensive solution tightly integrates core backup/recovery capabilities with advanced continuous application availability technologies - enabling mid-market companies to cost-effectively fulfill their compliance, data protection and recovery requirements via a "single point of control." Using this integrated dashboard, IT administrators can manage high-performance backup, continuous data protection (CDP), replication, failover and disaster recovery testing with point-and-click ease.

CA's mid-market technology portfolio also includes solutions that address key areas such as service desk/help desk, systems and network management, project and portfolio management, workload automation and data modeling.

New Security Updates Released for BrightStor® ARCserve® Backup and BrightStor® Enterprise Backup for Windows
New security updates have been released for BrightStor ARCserve Backup and BrightStor Enterprise Backup for Windows. These security updates address a potential remote code execution vulnerability in the Mediasvr.exe module (used by the ARCserve command line). This vulnerability was reported to CA by ZDI. This new security risk affects the base product only.

BrightStor® ARCserve® Backup for Windows r11.5: New Features Added in
Service Pack 3 - Vista Support, XOsoft WANSync Integration, and More!

In addition to containing the latest fixes, security updates, and new device support, Service Pack 3 has added support for new applications, operating systems, as well as new features. Listed below are some of the new features and newly supported application and OS versions:
  • BrightStor ARCserve Backup and CA XOsoft WANSync Integration.
    • Get the benefits of continuous data protection (CDP) and backup of this protected data.
    • WANSync continues to provide real-time, continuous data replication from the Production server (Master server) to the Replica server, while ARCserve then backs up this replicated data from the Replica server.
  • Added Operating System (OS) Support (base product, Client Agent, and Backup Agent for Open Files):
    • Microsoft Windows Vista (32-bit and x64) (Agent only)
    • VMware ESX Server version 3.0 and 3.0.1 (32-bit)
  • Updated Agent features:

BrightStor® ARCserve® Backup for UNIX and Linux: What is the Maximum Number of Sessions That can be Written to a Single Tape?
ARCserve allows up to 20000 sessions on a single tape and up to 25 sequences of a series of spanned tapes.

For a file system device (FSD), the limitation is 65535 sessions on a single FSD. Keep this in mind when planning your backups, because, if your sessions are small, you can reach 20000 sessions very quickly. If you have a large amount of data to back up, you can quickly exceed 25 sequences, depending upon how much data each tape can hold.
