BrightStor® CA-Allocate™ PTF QO84348 and the Data Class DVC
The IBM DF/SMS DATA CLASS "DYNAMIC VOLUME COUNT (DVC)" parameter allows eligible data sets to automatically expand to multiple volumes. The IBM publication z/OS DFSMS Storage Administration Reference SC26-7402 has complete details on this parameter. In general, to be eligible for DVC processing, the data set has to be SMS-managed, and also be defined with a DATA CLASS that has the "SPACE CONSTRAINT RELIEF=Y" parameter specified.

When an eligible data set is defined with a DATA CLASS that has a DVC value greater than the current volume count, and space is exhausted on the current volume, then IBM End-of-Volume (EOV) processing will recognize the DVC as a candidate volume, and automatically allow the data set to expand to an additional volume. For non-VSAM SMS-managed data sets, BrightStor CA-Allocate has always recognized the existence of the DVC as a candidate volume, and does not enter the "EOV" ASR environment.

With the availability of PTF QO84348, BrightStor CA-Allocate now recognizes DVC candidate volumes for eligible SMS-managed VSAM data sets. After applying this PTF, additional flexibility is available in the "EOV_VSAM" ASR environment.

If the VKGPARMS parmlib member PLSOPT24 is set to the default value of "N", the "EOV_VSAM" ASR environment will continue to be entered even if a DVC candidate volume is available. However, the ASR variable &CANDIDATE_VOLUMES (alias is &CAND_VOLS) will have a value of "Y" if there are any DVC candidate volumes available. To allow the DATA CLASS DVC parameter to perform the volume addition, the ASR does not need to have a SET &SG='SMSEOV' or a SET &POOLSUB='Y'. For example, an ASR code snippet like this: IF &VAMENVIR = 'EOV_VSAM' THEN
IF &CAND_VOLS = 'Y' THEN EXIT CODE(0)
will allow the DATA CLASS DVC parameter to add an additional volume to the data set. Existing ASR code that performs other processing can be left in place, but to allow the DATA CLASS DVC to perform the volume addition requires not having a SET &SG='SMSEOV' or a SET &POOLSUB='Y' present if &CAND_VOLS = 'Y'. Once the DVC candidate volumes have been used up (&CAND_VOLS = 'N'), BrightStor CA-Allocate will continue to add volumes as it has prior to the availability of PTF QO84348.

If the VKGPARMS parmlib member PLSOPT24 is set to the value of "Y", the "EOV_VSAM" ASR environment will not be entered if a DVC candidate volume is available. This is useful in reducing BrightStor CA-Allocate overhead if the "EOV_VSAM"’ ASR does not need to be entered.

For DB2 linear data sets that are shared among multiple DB2 systems across a sysplex, BrightStor CA-Allocate Level 2 support is recommending that these data sets be defined with the DVC parameter, thus allowing IBM EOV processing to handle the adding of a volume to these data sets.

In summary, for eligible VSAM data sets, BrightStor CA-Allocate PTF QO84348 provides support for the DATA CLASS DVC parameter by recognizing a DVC volume as a candidate volume.

BrightStor® CA-Vantage™ Storage Resource Manager - New Enhancements Introduced in the SP4 Maintenance Delivery. Part I of II.
In this month's newsletter, we highlight exciting new enhancements to the DFSMShsm interface of BrightStor CA-Vantage that are being delivered on r11.5 SP4. Next month, we will continue with Part II where we will highlight the introduction of a new Internal Status Monitor for CA-Vantage and new RAID improvements that enhance overall CA-Vantage PPRC management.

DFSMShsm Option Changes
The following sections describe the changes to the DFSMShsm Option included in the SP4 service pack.

DFSMShsm Monitor Interval
The maximum interval for the DFSMShsm Monitor has been increased from 999 to 86400 seconds (24 hours). This means that the maximum value for sysparm HMOINTVD is now 86400 seconds (24 hours) and the module HSMMON was modified to support this.

Support Added for New Timer in the DFSMShsm Monitor
Support for a new timer in the DFSMShsm Monitor has been added to reduce DFSMShsm Monitor CPU usage.

The DFSMShsm Monitor is designed to provide real-time monitoring of DFSMShsm activity. It collects and presents information about DFSMShsm status, active and queued requests, recall activity, CPU usage, and other data generated by DFSMShsm. BrightStor CA-Vantage collects the information at user-specified times and intervals, and presents it in a comprehensive table.

The DFSMShsm Monitor has been changed to use 2 interval timers instead of 1. The existing interval timer (sysparm HMOINTVD) has been changed so that it now applies only to "Group 1" fields. These are fields that can be populated without using many CPU resources. The "Group 1" fields are: Recall Activity, Waiting, CPU %, CPU Usage, Active, Tapes Active, Host ID, Name, and Status fields.

A new interval timer (sysparm HMOINTVU) is used to populate the "Group 2" fields that require more CPU resources. These "Group 2" fields are the remaining fields in the object display that have names beginning with JRNL, MCDS, BCDS, OCDS, SDSP, and ML1.

The DFSMShsm Monitor has also been enhanced to display Journal data set percentage utilization and sysparm JRNLDSN was added for specifying the name of the DFSMShsm Journal data set.

New "DFSMShsm Primary and Auxiliary Hosts" Object Added
The new DFSMShsm Primary and Auxiliary Hosts object shows all active DFSMShsm address spaces in a single z/OS Image and it gives a better view of the DFSMShsm Environment when running multiple DFSMShsm tasks. This object includes Zooms to other related DFSMShsm objects and can be found in the Object Tree directory: Backup and Archive Management > DFSMShsm > Multiple Address Spaces > DFSMShsm Primary and Auxiliary Hosts.

New "Active DFSMShsm Data Movement Tasks" Object Added
The new Active DFSMShsm Data Movement Tasks object was created with the ability to cancel an active DFSMShsm data movement task. This allows DFSMShsm users to cancel any or all active DFSMShsm data movement tasks, including ABARS tasks that process in their own address space. Previously, when you needed to cancel an active individual DFSMShsm data movement task, you had to bring down the entire DFSMShsm address space. Now an active data movement task can be cancelled without impacting other ongoing DFSMShsm activities. This enhancement promotes higher DFSMShsm availability. The new Active DFSMShsm Data Movement Tasks object can be found in the Object Tree directory: Backup and Archive Management > DFSMShsm > Primary Address Spaces > Active DFSMShsm Data Movement Tasks.

Volume Status Field Added to the OCDS "Tape Volumes" and "Recycle Candidates" Objects
A new field, Volume Status, has been added that contains the status of a tape volume. This field will contain a value of "FULL", "EMPTY", or "PARTLY" in the DFSMShsm objects OCDS Tape Volumes and Recycle Candidates. These objects are found in the Object Tree directory: Backup and Archive Management > DFSMShsm > Control Data Sets > OCDS. This new field can be useful for determining how many EMPTY tapes are available for DFSMShsm backup and migration.

New Zooms Added to DFSMShsm Objects
The Open Zoom feature provides you with a list of objects that have related information. You can select an object from the Zoom list dialog to view the related information in that object.

New Zooms have been added from the following DFSMShsm objects to the DFSMShsm MCDS Records and DFSMShsm BCDS Backup Version Records objects:
  • All objects found in the Report Details folder in the Object Tree directory: Backup and Archive Management > DFSMShsm
  • All objects found in the Audits folder in the Object Tree directory: Backup and Archive Management > DFSMShsm
  • The DUMPVTOC Data Set List object found in the Object Tree directory: Backup and Archive Management > DFSMShsm > Primary Address Space
  • The Request Queues object found in the Object Tree directory: Backup and Archive Management > DFSMShsm > Primary Address Space
