How may customers purchase business licenses?

Depending on the environment there are several methods for licensing CA Threat Management solutions. As a general rule the number of licenses purchased should reflect the number of installs "utilized", meaning the number of protected end-nodes as a result of installation. There are some caveats and considerations to this below:

Citrix and Windows Terminal Services licensing - In a Citrix or Terminal Services environment, the server hosts all client application software. It is a common misconception to believe that CA Threat Management Solutions should only be licensed for the server. In these environments each session requires a license for a given CA Threat Management Solution, just as each session requires a Microsoft OS license. To identify the correct number of required licenses, simply identify the number of Microsoft OS licenses required for the environment and license the same number of the appropriate CA Threat Management Solution.

NetApp Filer - In a NetApp environment, licensing CA Anti-Virus is treated in the same way as a Microsoft Windows Server. NetApp only represents one license despite its capability to host data supplied to many clients.

EMC Celerra Filer - In an EMC Celerra environment licensing CA Anti-Virus is treated in the same way as a Microsoft Windows Server. EMC Celerra only represents one license despite its capability to host data supplied to many clients.

Gateway/Email Server Protection - The CA Anti-Virus or CA Secure Content Manager can also be installed at the Gateway or on the Email server such as

Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Domino. This often occurs when a customer prefers a multi-vendor approach to protecting their environment. In this scenario, licenses should be counted by the number of protected clients or nodes. In the case of email server protection, all email recipients within the network benefit from a single gateway install. This does not change even if the customer is using a competitive vendor's solution on the desktop, as all clients are still benefiting from CA's gateway protection.

CA Threat Management - Consumer Solutions:

Total Internet Security

Privacy Protection

Portable Software

Virus Protection

Data Protection

CA consumer solution licensing is based on a 20 character license key, made up of 4 sets of 5 characters separated by hyphens (e.g. XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX). The license key activates the product in the standard retail version for 1 year. Once the license key is entered (during product installation), the 1 year count down commences.

Note: If the license key expires, CA consumer licensing prevents the solution from receiving further updates, until a valid license key is entered. However, the product will continue to function in the same state as it did upon the expiration of the license key.

License Key Delivery:

  • Box Product and OEM Sleeves - license keys can be delivered to a customer in a variety of ways; for example, consumer retail box product and OEM CD Sleeves provide the license key on a printed label on the reverse of the CD envelope sleeve.

  • Online Store - Consumer products purchased via the CA online store are fulfilled via electronic delivery. Once the product is purchased, an email is sent to the customer with a license key and download instructions. The customers are given login details to enable them to return to the online store and download the product at a future date for as long as the license key is still valid
